VAW worked with their first ever team of volunteers: 7 individuals from the University of California, Berkeley. The team was interested in building water filters and learning public health issues common to the area. Since then, VAW has worked in the Lake Atitlan area with Nutritional Security projects and Water Filter projects.

The national organization had since expanded to 6 medical and dental sites: Dominican Republic, Peru, Guatemala, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Panama. The Georgia Tech chapter was created in 2014, where a team of 7 students traveled to Bocas del Toro, Panama for a 2-week medical outreach trip. The GT chapter upholds the same mission and values of the national organization.
